Those are some comments I got when I conducted my utterly unscientific survey on this topic with a handful of single women in Beijing, ranging from their twenties to forties. And they agree with the women, Beijing is not a relationship place. Too many distractions here. I know a few gals who did. But they have been here for a while, usually way over a year, and been through the cycles of dating frustrations.
And then often the relationship happens, when one or both of the partners are about to move away from Beijing, of course in different directions.
No matter where you go, or which single-and-ready-to-mingle person you talk to, the complaint is always the same: dating is hard. For expats.
That said, there are a LOT of single Chinese guys. To even consider getting a wife, a Chinese guy needs to own a home apartment in a big city , a car, and preferably make XXX money every month. Men are expected to possess substantial wealth in order for them to consider marriage and family. This in turn, in my opinion, perpetuates the misogynist notion of women being commodities, because the rich guy almost always gets the girl.
A rich guy from the city has a much bigger advantage than his rural counterpart, because the rural population tends to be more conservative and their families more extended. That means, a city woman who marries a country guy basically just marries his entire family back in some small rural town. So in the end, the vast population of bachelors in China is mostly country guys working in cities. Mainland Chinese male here. After girls start to work and pay checks by themselves, they start to realize that how harsh the life can be without money and how wonderful the life is if they can marry a rich guy.
A common rule is that the male needs to own an apartment and a car before marriage. A 3-bedroom apartment in a major city of China is around , USD the price is doubled in Beijing.

Many single expat women quickly find that most foreign dreamboats have already sailed, and their chemistry with local men rarely stirs the right mix for a love potion. She says that even though foreign men in Beijing are available, she has seen that they are likelier to seek local women. Part of that self-discovery has been that I haven’t had a steady boyfriend and had to struggle through comparing myself to these beautiful, petite Chinese girls.
I have come to terms with the way I look and the way I am built. I am more confident because of this experience. Many foreign women complain that the fabric of the men who are attracted to the expatriate lifestyle is too often different from that of good dating material. Maybe the executive type is already married, busy or boring. And of course, you don’t want to date a weirdo. Here you meet five normal guys, and there’s such a small chance that one of them is the one you want.

Just saying. The people who bother to pay for such programs happen to be mostly expats desperate to be on the social media apps so they can be in touch with friends and family outside of China.

So at the ripe age of 30, I have given up on trying to find my Mr Right.
For now, anyway. As a result, the streets of the city are filled with smug-looking Western guys holding hands with their pint-sized Chinese princesses. After all, when a Chinese girl pouts, a million hearts melt; when I pout, I resemble a fish.
So where does this leave the expat women? Gorging on crispy duck and splurging on pirated copies of Downton Abbey? However, unlike the majority of Western women living in China, who watch bitterly as the egos of below-average men swell from the admiring looks of Chinese girls, I took an altogether different approach and chose to date Chinese men instead.
