The Code on the tube chart of your Fender Amp is made up of two letters. The First letter equates to the Year and the Second letter to the Month. Reissue amps also use stamped Date Codes. On old Jensen speakers, there is sometimes an extra letter and I don’t know what it means, like C12RL. What’s the “L” mean? There are letters that can appear in.

Wayne, Indiana. That amp worked pretty well with my Rick string. That amp turned out to be an early-production Pro-Amp. I started to investigate the world of pre-CBS Fender amplifiers. During that era Fender blackface amps, covered in black tolex with silver grilles, were everywhere. I combed through vintage dealer ads and began to pick up Fender amps in tweed, white, brown and blackface versions, trying to stick to or before.

Some of the amps in my collection have their original tubes, capacitors and speakers; on some they have been replaced. I have presented my amps in rough chronological order by era. The general information provided was obtained from books, online sources or personal observation. Other than the tweeds, where I am missing some of the high-end models, I believe you will find here a fairly good representation of Fender amp models in the brown, white and blackface eras.

I hope you enjoy what you find. The Dual Professional was the first to have tweed covering, a top-mounted control panel and a tube chart, which would eventually become standard for all but the smallest amp models. It was also the first to have two speakers. This example is all original with linen grille cloth and vertical wooden slats hidden underneath the grille cloth to protect the speaker.

Early Custom’s were build without the interlock switches, although the interlock was on the schematic inside the amp. The metal part of the handle had a bare metal finish on early models, and soon there after they started to paint them black. Also, the badge plates were different on the very early Customs, eventually they were produced with the large “M” below right. It is possible that the first models had yet a different plate than the style of the early M7 plate below.
